Denmark Passes Dual-Citizenship Bill
March 18, 2015
Danish citizens have another reason to celebrate as the Danish parliament has finally agreed to implement dual citizenship. The law, which will take effect on September 1, 2015, will allow for Danes living abroad to become naturalized citizens in the United States. Until now, Denmark has held the minority view among European Union countries, and refused to support dual citizenship.
The Danes began moving to the United States in the mid-1800s, when the rapid expansion of Danish population caused employment and food to become scarce. Today, the United States Census estimates that there are approximately 1.5 million people of Danish origin or descent living in the U.S.
The passing of this dual citizenship bill will finally allow Danes living abroad to maintain their Danish heritage, and also pursue citizenship in the United States. With the passage of this bill, Danes who were forced to renounce their Danish citizenship within the past five years will be able to reinstate it.
